Jeremy Stone by Lesley Choyce - Teaser by Cindy, Staff Blogger

Lesley Choyce Reading from Jeremy Stone - photoI first noticed the book, Jeremy Stone, by author, Lesley Choyce because of Word On The Street, where Lesley Choyce read an exerpt on the Vibrant Voices Stage on the Halifax waterfront (see photo). I was intrigued by the story and by Lesley's comments on various parts of the story, so I put this book on my reading list.

The other day, I was wondering what to read next on my list, when I saw a CBC announcement about the Governor General's Literary Awards shortlist, and there was Jeremy Stone! Now, I definitely have to read this book!

Here is a brief summary:

Jeremy Stone - book cover

"After moving from a residential school to a new school in a new community, Jeremy, a First Nations teenage boy is trying to find out where he fits in the world. He soon meets Caitlan, an intense girl who tells him about another boy -- a boyfriend of hers -- who has committed suicide. Jeremy isn't sure whether he has much to offer Caitlan, given his own uncertainties, but he is solid and supportive towards his new friend. A lot of the support comes from Old Man, the spirit of Jeremy's dead grandfather, with whom he has frequent illuminating conversations. In fact, Jeremy has frequent contact with the spirit world -- his grandfather, Jenson, the suicide, as well as a childhood friend of Jeremy's, Jimmy Falcon. Each of these spirits help Jeremy find his way.~publisher

Jeremy Stone is a novel that is written in free verse - cool!

And includes an interview with the author - bonus!

Lesley Choyce is a local author who lives at Lawrencetown Beach, Nova Scotia - what a great place to live and write!

PS: Wondering who that woman is in the photo sitting next to Lesley reading? It's author, Lisa Harrington who was reading from her brand new novel, Twisted (coming soon to a library near you!).
