FAQ: Library Service During Employee Strike  

As of Monday, August 26 all locations of the Halifax Public Libraries will be temporarily closed until further notice due to a strike of NSUPE, Local 14. This includes all branch libraries, Borrow by Mail and Home Delivery Service and Interlibrary loans.  

Halifax Public Libraries recognizes this disruption to library services will be challenging for many in our community. We respect NSUPE, Local 14’s right to take labour action, and remain committed to resolving outstanding issues at the bargaining table.  

Are all library branches closed? 

Yes, at this time, all library locations are closed. Borrow by Mail, Home Delivery Service, and Interlibrary loans are suspended during this time.  

When will branches open?  

We are unsure at this time. Halifax Public Libraries is committed to this ongoing work and are hopeful that we can agree on the outstanding issues at the bargaining table. We are continuing to work with NSUPE, Local 14 members to reach a deal.  

Members of the public are encouraged to check www.HalifaxPublicLibraries.ca or call your local branch before visiting. The public will be notified when regular library service is resumed.   

Can I drop my books off at my local branch? 

No. All book drops are closed at this time. Materials will be due after library service resumes, and there are no fines or fees for overdue items. 

Will I receive fines for overdue materials?

Can I pick up my holds? 

All materials on hold will remain on the Holds Pickup Shelves and be available when the Library re-opens. All due dates will be adjusted.  

Can I still place holds on the website for when the branches reopen?

You can still continue to explore Halifax Public Libraries’ collection online and holds can be placed on materials even when Libraries are closed. You’ll receive notification when they are available for pickup.  

Can I still use digital library services? 

Yes. Digital services like Hoopla, Libby/Overdrive, Kanopy, PressReader, Novelist, and WIFI remain available.   

Will there be programs available in the community or outside of the library branches?
No. During a work stoppage, all Library programs will be cancelled. The public will be notified when regular library service and programming is resumed.   

Does a strike impact Borrow By Mail and Home Delivery? 

Yes. We understand deeply the significance of Borrow By Mail and Home Delivery Services, and the connections you have built with Library staff. We are committed to reaching an agreement that reflects our shared priorities and returning this service to our valued clients.  

Does the strike impact English Language Learning and English Conversation groups? 

Yes. Language learning programs will not be available during a work stoppage. We know many newcomers and volunteers find meaningful connections through language learning services at the public library. Halifax Public Libraries is committed to this ongoing work and are hopeful that we can agree on the outstanding issues at the bargaining table and return to the Fall schedule.  

Is TD Summer Reading Club cancelled? 

Keep reading and tracking your progress. TD Summer Reading Club is paused and will be available for you when library branches reopen. There are still prizes to be won.

I booked a room at the Library, what should I do? 

Individuals and organizations that have room bookings have been contacted about cancelling their booking. If you have questions about a room booking, please reach out to agadmin@halifxlibrary.ca 

What about people that need the washrooms?  

At this time, all Library locations are closed during an employee strike. You can reference tools like Crohn’s & Colitis GoHere App to find local washrooms.
