Woodlawn Public Library has a past life. Sometimes Library users have this look on their face as they scan the building, remembering a first date or a regular Friday night with friends.
“This used to be the movie theatre!,” they’ll say, surprised, trying to picture the old theatre through the bookshelves.
Woodlawn Public Library moved into the old Empire Theatres building in April of 2010 and patrons are pleasantly surprised to find out that, while most of the space was repurposed, we have kept one thing the same—a theatre. It has comfortable theatre seating with a sloped floor and a stage. It’s well used as a performance space, a lecture hall, and of course, a movie theatre.
We have hosted countless large-scale events here including university classes, book launches, and performances including the Nova Scotia Mass Choir and our annual cultural showcase.
We show recently-released movies every Wednesday afternoon, and kids movies on most school PD days. We don’t sell pricey popcorn or confections but you are welcome to bring your own. And as always, these events are all free of charge.
The auditorium seats 100 people and is available for rent at a reasonable price.
We are fortunate to have such a great space in our community so come out, sit back, and enjoy the show. You can find our upcoming movie list in the branch or here on our website.
