Set It Off’s 2012 studio effort Cinematics is an album that I never thought I would like as much I as did. On the surface, it's another rock album in the same vein as My Chemical Romance or Panic at the Disco. As much as I don’t like using the term “emo,” it’s admittedly a fair description of this album. However, this album is set apart by doing a few things outstandingly well, at the expense of other aspects being mediocre.

As far as singer-songwriters go, Tape Deck Heart is a bit of a strange album from a strange source. Frank Turner is an English guitarist and singer whose genre is best described as “Folk Punk.” To be more specific, Turner infuses his simple, acoustic songwriting style with the energy and brutal honesty of punk rock. That’s a combination that’s a bit tricky to pull off properly, but when it’s done right it creates music that’s hard-hitting, emotional, and downright fun to listen to. Other times, however, it just doesn’t come together properly and feels lacking in both the Folk and Punk departments.

The Madman’s Daughter by Megan Shepherd is a YA science fiction inspired by H.G.Wells’s story, The Island of Dr.Moreau.
In Wells’s novel, a castaway named Prendick is drifting around on a raft when a man named Montgomery rescues him. Montgomery tells Prendick that he is heading towards the island home of his benefactor, Dr. Moreau. Prendick and Montgomery soon become good friends, and Prendick accompanies Montgomery to the island where he finds out that Dr. Moreau has been performing strange experiments on the animals that Montgomery brings him.

Art comes in an abundance of diverse mediums: paint, pencils, sculptures. Words. And all of these art forms, no matter how different, have one thing in common; they make you feel something. Jandy Nelson says “What is bad for the heart is good for art” and I’ll Give You the Sun will make you feel that in every morsel of your being in the way that great art does.
