Tolkien's Roverandom by Anna, Teen Blogger
The recent release of the movie, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, has led to many people reading or re-reading not only The Hobbit, but also J.R.R. Tolkien’s other works such as The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion. There are other works of Tolkien’s that are not quite so well known, and one of these is Roverandom.
Roverandom is an odd tale about a dog named Rover who offends a wizard and so is turned into a little toy dog. He wants to become a regular dog again, and to do this he ends up going on quite a grand adventure. In his journey to return to normal he ends up on the moon and at the bottom of the ocean. In both of those places he meets other dogs named Rover and, as they cannot all be called Rover, he earns the name Roverandom.
This is a short, light, fun story that is great for all ages. Although The Hobbit was meant to be a children’s story, I would say that Roverandom fits that classification much better, as it is a lot lighter and a much quicker read. I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone.
