The Lost Crown by Sarah Miller- Review by Havana, Teen Blogger

The Lost Crown-book coverI really liked this book. I'm not usually into historical fiction but this story was really well written.

The Lost Crown by Sarah Miller takes place during World War I and is set in Russia. The whole book is from the point of view of the four Grand Duchesses, Maria, Tatiana, Olga and Anastasia, who are the daughters of Tsar Nicholas II. They are royalty but they are also normal young women; they like to flirt with and talk to the young soldiers stationed outside their prison-like house. They aren't at all snooty the way you think they would be and they certainly aren't fragile. Even when their religious ceremonies are taken away from them, they still keep their faith. In fact, they are quite brave, keeping up as regular a routine as possible and still managing to have some fun moments, even in the darkest of times. One could even say that they are braver than some soldiers, the way they show courage even in the face of horrible battle wounds and nasty, rude townspeople who look at them in their prison as if they were animals. Don't worry; the book doesn't go into gory details or anything! At least I didn't think so. I thought it was perfect! It had just enough detail to help me understand a bit of how the whole thing went down without making me cry. From happy days before the war to more uncertain days during the war, the book tells their tale until their last moments. I would really recommend trying it.
