Series in the Spotlight by Angela, Teen Blogger

Divergent & Insurgent by Veronica Roth

  • Abnegation (the selfless)
  • Dauntless (the brave)
  • Erudite (the intelligent)
  • Candor (the honest)
  • Amity (the peaceful)

Beatrice Prior always felt that she had to do something different. She didn’t want to stay in her hometown Abnegation for EVER. Upon Choosing Ceremony, Beatrice wanted a new life of her own, and chose the Dauntless life over her family and friends. She renamed herself Tris and met a few friends, including her mysterious instructor, Four. In order to be a Dauntless citizen, Tris has to pass various physical and virtual tests to prove she's brave and strong. Being divergent, she has enough mind power to overcome the more-important virtual tests. Getting through the test will be easy for her. But everything won’t be that easy, will it? And is being divergent really a good thing?

The Divergent series is somewhat similar to The Hunger Games trilogy. At first I was intrigued by the cover of book (you can’t deny it, it looks awesome). And then, it was like magic -- I couldn’t put it down. After you finish reading Divergent, move on to the second book, Insurgent. Hopefully, by then, the third book will be out. Wait, I’m not done here... There will also be a movie coming. We might have to wait a while, as it's scheduled for 2015, but word is out that the movie might come out early.

The Maze Runner book coverThe Maze Runner by James Dashner

Thomas woke up in the pitch black Box. When he was dragged out, he was inside four very tall walls. Outside was the maze. He had no memories of how he got there or anything about his past life. The only thing he knew was his first name. Now, he’s to live in the Glade, a boys-only community, until they find an escape. In the Glade, the youth who live there have to take care of everything -- cooking, farming, feeding animals, etc. Their only hope to get out of the place is to run into the maze and try to find a way out. There's no solution, until a girl arrives in the elevator one day...

This is a series about a world in catastrophe and how one boy can save the world. Well, kind of save it. If you like a little adventure and sci-fi, the Maze Runner books will be great reading for you. But if you are a bit afraid of people dying, this series might not be a good fit for you. I really like how James Dashner recognizes possible world issues and makes his books interesting.

Fallen book coverFallen by Lauren Kate

Luce was so confused. Trevor, her boyfriend, was dead, and she had no idea how it happened. She was suspected and accused of his murder, and that’s why she ended up in the creepy reform school, Swords & Crosses. She makes friends and enemies in the black and gray school, along with two guys she is attracted to. Why is Daniel, the mysterious guy she likes, avoiding her? There is definitely something wrong with all the kids at Swords and Crosses. Read to find out more...

There are four books to the Fallen series. Fallen In Love is an extra "side-stories" book that tells more about the romances between the characters. At first you might be weirded out by the strange setting of the first book, but hey, you just can’t predict how good it’s going to be. They are best-sellers for a reason!
