Openly Straight by Bill Konigsberg - Teaser by Cindy, Staff Blogger

I have to admit, it was the title that first caught my attention: Openly Straight. What an interesting and thought provoking title! So I opened the cover, started reading, and wasn’t exactly hooked at the opening line by the main character, Rafe, “If it were up to my dad, my entire life would be on video”. Okaaay…what parent doesn’t film their kid, I thought. I kept reading and by the fourth page, I realized that Rafe is not just his father’s child. He has an identity beyond his family and beyond those images captured on video. Just like any teen right? Not quite. Rafe has a label. He’s gay Rafe.

Openly Straight - book coverRafe came out as gay in the eighth grade, but now, a few years later, when he looks in the mirror, this is what he sees: "GAY GAY GAY RAFE GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY..." "The image I saw was so two-dimensional that I coundn't recognize myself in it." He decides he wants to live ‘label free’ and so heads off to an all-boys boarding school to be openly straight.

I found myself wondering:

“How will he cope being openly straight?”

“Will this affect his relationship with his father?”

“What challenges will the all-boys boarding school bring?”

“Will he meet someone special?”

So, I checked this book out to finish reading it.

If you are as intrigued as I am, you can check out a copy for yourself at your local library or place a hold from the Discover Catalogue.

I found this book on the LGBTQ display shelf at a Halifax Public Libraries branch. A few other titles on the display caught my eye, so I have to go back and have another look. Race you!
